The NC men’s soccer team was recently featured for its commitment to mentoring and developing coaches in a profile from BPSN.

Head coach Frank DeChellis highlighted the program’s focus on fostering coaching talent, emphasizing that mentoring is vital for both personal growth and sustaining the sport’s future. “Mentoring and sharing are a huge part of a coach’s development,” he said DeChellis.

The profile also highlights that DeChellis has guided assistant coaches Andrew Currie and Stéphane Émard, who recently earned their C-License Diplomas from Canada Soccer. Currie, a former NC soccer captain and two-time Ontario Colleges Athletic Association all-star, spoke about the mentorship he received from DeChellis, saying, “He is not just my mentor; he is my friend.” Currie has already started paying it forward by mentoring others.

Émard, who joined Niagara in 2023, praised DeChellis for opening doors that have allowed him to thrive in his role as Technical Director of the Welland Soccer Club and as Niagara’s strength and conditioning coach. “Frank has given me a good platform to pursue my coaching but also made me comfortable to ask for help and guidance,” said Émard.

NC’s Director of Athletics and Student Engagement is also quoted in the article: “The sports community develops our student-athletes before they come to us, so NC has to contribute however we can to build that pool of prospects.”
