Sad news: Retiree death

Fred Bassi, retired NC faculty member, passed away on Nov. 12.

Niagara College retiree Fred Bassi has passed away at the age of 79.

Niagara College extends its deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Fred was the most successful coach in Niagara College history. The Boston University Hockey Hall of Famer began his coaching career at Niagara College in 1970 when he was hired as a faculty member in the Athletic Department and Head Coach of the Niagara Hockey Knights. In those 30 years, Fred won the respect of thousands of students, athletes, and staff on and off the field of play.

As head coach of the Knights for 24 years, he guided the Knights to five gold medal International Collegiate Hockey League championships, four silver, five bronze and one OCAA (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) silver medal. He was voted ICHL Coach of the Year three times and served as president for six years and OCAA Hockey Governor for two years.

Fred also guided the mixed doubles tennis team to an OCAA gold medal in 1974. He was the head coach of the tennis team from 1972-1980, touch football 1979-1982 and cross country 1979-1980.
