On November 6, Niagara College recognized 10 years of leadership excellence at the LEAD (Leadership Exploration and Development) launch event where more than 50 students connected with alumni and celebrated the start of this year’s program.
Created in 2014, LEAD is a co-curricular program designed to offer students from any academic area the opportunity to explore and develop leadership skills within three key areas: personal development, career readiness and community engagement.

“LEAD is a fantastic opportunity for Niagara College students from all academic areas to learn the soft skills that will give them a competitive edge when they enter the workforce,” said Sarah Singleton, Student Engagement and Leadership Program Coordinator. “Through LEAD, students have access to a network of industry leaders and tools to help them build confidence as they work towards completing their studies at NC.”
Commencing in November and concluding in early April, LEAD fosters the growth and development of students by providing the tools, knowledge and experience to make them leaders not only at Niagara College, but in the wider community, as alumni and career leaders.
Students involved in the LEAD program can choose from a multi-level approach by deciding what Level of Leadership they would like to work towards. Throughout their time at NC, they can work to become a Bronze, Silver or Gold Leader.
The newest cohort of LEAD participants includes more than 200 students from various program areas who – through the LEAD program – will develop their leadership skills through in-person and online workshops, guest speakers, conferences, networking events and more. Students who successfully complete the program will earn a Certificate of Leadership via their co-curricular record.

“The LEAD Launch event created an empowering and inspiring atmosphere which encouraged students to gain valuable networking skills,” shared Ali Weir, Manager, Student Engagement. “You could feel the sense of belonging that was shared amongst the students as they interacted with their peers, alumni and industry professionals and the Student Engagement team is proud to support such a wonderful program.”
