Reminder: Community events for Emancipation Day July 27 to Aug 1

In celebration of Emancipation Day, observed annually in Canada, commemorating the abolition of slavery in the British Empire on August 1, 1834, Niagara College is a proudly sponsoring a series of events in St. Catharines hosted by Matter of Black and Blackowned905.

The NC community is encouraged to take part in the events at Lakeside Park in Port Dalhousie:

July 27: Salem Chapel BME Church tour in partnership with Tubman Tours Canada

July 28: A full day of celebration, live music, vendors and food trucks in Lakeside Park from noon to dusk.

August 1: The raising of the Pan African flag at City Hall, followed by “Soul” film screening in the PAC’s backyard

Emancipation Day serves as a reminder of Canada’s historical role in ending the transatlantic slave trade and granting freedom to thousands of enslaved individuals.
