The first students in Niagara College’s online Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Graduate Certificate program, launched in September, have successfully completed their studies in April and are ready to make a meaningful impact as ESL educators both in Canada and around the world.

This one-year intensive program, meticulously crafted by NC’s School of English Language Studies, was designed to empower graduates with the competencies to navigate the complexities of ESL instruction.

“The program has equipped me with a comprehensive set of tools and knowledge to address the unique challenges faced by ESL learners, ensuring that they receive a high-quality, equitable education,” said graduate Mel Caesar-Phillip. “I am confident it has prepared me for a great career as an ESL educator.”

Accredited by both TESL Ontario and TESL Canada, the program ensures that graduates meet the rigorous standards required for ESL teaching positions.

“The program was originally established and developed to address the growing need for qualified ESL teachers both in Canada and internationally,” said the program’s coordinator, Faith Marcel, who also teaches the Workplace Communication course. “What makes this program unique is its comprehensive approach that includes theory and methodology-focused classes, extensive training with educational technologies, and arranged practicum placements.”

The virtual format enables students to engage in interactive coursework, blending synchronous and asynchronous sessions to accommodate different learning styles. Also central to the program is integrating technology in ESL instruction, with graduates proficiently utilizing various digital tools to create dynamic and interactive learning environments for diverse ESL learners.

“The online delivery was convenient and flexible as it allowed us to balance our studies with other commitments,” said graduate Ana McKnight. “I found it particularly engaging because it provided access to an array of digital resources I can now incorporate into my teaching. As peers, we also overcame distance barriers by creating an inclusive atmosphere where everyone’s voice mattered, and we learned as much from each other as we did from our coursework.”

The program’s experiential learning component allows students to apply their knowledge in real-world teaching environments under the guidance of experienced professionals.

“For the placements, our pre-service teachers are placed with highly qualified mentor teachers,” added Marcel. “This practice occurs either within NC’s English for Academic Preparation program, facilitated by our highly experienced faculty, or within different language schools in the community.”

Reflecting on her experience, McKnight highlighted how the practicum enabled her self-development.

“My time at the Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre had the biggest impact on my development,” said McKnight. “It provided an opportunity for me to teach a diverse group of newcomers to Canada a curriculum that emphasizes practical communication skills in accordance with Canadian Language Benchmarks. This hands-on experience taught me the importance of self-reflection and continuous improvement, both of which will remain cornerstones of my self-development.”

To further support students, NC offers a range of professional development workshops, collaborates with our local professional English-teaching organization, TESL Niagara, and offers presentations from public and private sector employers in the TESL field throughout the program. These initiatives keep students updated on current trends in education. Through peer collaboration, group projects, and discussions, students can exchange ideas and insights, fostering a vibrant and interactive learning community.

“I highly recommend the program to anyone that wants to not only embark on a career that offers diverse opportunities and stability but also contribute meaningfully to the lives of individuals and the broader global community,” said Caesar-Phillip.

As the first graduates of Niagara College’s online TESL Graduate Certificate program start their new roles as educators, they bring with them the knowledge, skills, and passion to make a meaningful impact in classrooms in Canada and around the world.
