On Saturday, June 1, Niagara College’s Athletics and Student Engagement department is hosting its third annual Welland Girls Sports Day in partnership with the City of Welland.
The free event – from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Empire Sportsplex in Welland – is designed for girls aged six to 12 to participate in and learn about a variety of sports from accomplished Knights female athletes, varsity coaches and community partners. The day aims to empower girls of all abilities and their families with the experience, confidence and resources required to get involved in sport and active recreation within their community. Multiple academic areas are involved in the event, including the Recreation Therapy and Hairstyling programs, to help make the day a fun experience for participants.
To ensure the event’s success, Athletics and Student Engagement is looking for volunteers to help on June 1.
There are several volunteer roles available between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., including but not limited to:
- Set-Up and Parking Attendants
- Activity Leads
- Nutrition Providers
- Floaters
- Wrap/Clean Up
Students, employees and community members interested in volunteering are asked to sign up online by May 27. NC students may submit the experience for Co-Curricular Record (CCR) credit. Please reach out to Student Engagement and Leadership Program Coordinator Nimisha Sumathi with any questions about volunteering.
Welland Girls Sports Day has earned a positive reputation among local youth and parents since its first event in 2022. This year’s event reached full participant capacity in three days and is currently waitlisted!
