On March 21, CHCH aired a segment that previewed a variety of program areas at Niagara College ahead of the College’s Spring Open House.
The segment featured Chef Professor Olaf Mertens, Jessica Neal-Ellis, Events Planner, Wine Visitor + Education Centre, Kayla Benner, second year student from the School of Business & Management, and Chris Treschak, Associate Dean, School of Environment & Horticulture. The segment also engaged with students on campus, including Culinary Management students and Landscape, Horticulture, and Greenhouse Technician students as they prepare for the Spring Open House.
One part of the segment highlighted a collaborative effort between the Landscape, Horticulture, and Greenhouse Technician students and Construction students, who were tasked with constructing a booth for the Open House as part of their curriculum.
The segment also showcased Construction students assembling a chainsaw, demonstrating the hands-on nature of the program. Treschak emphasized the unique aspect of the program, stating, “one of the benefits of this type of program is the hands-on component. Another unique aspect is that our students are responsible for maintaining the entire landscape here at Niagara College, whether through co-op placements or as part of their coursework. They handle all aspects of campus landscape maintenance.”
