The three Niagara dailies (St. Catharines Standard, Niagara Falls Review and Welland Tribune) released a January 27 article on the impacts of the international student cap on Niagara post-secondary institutions.
NC’s Vice President, International, Sean Coote is interviewed in the article discussing the unexpectedness of the announcement and how it is particularly affecting Niagara College. Coote is quoted in the article: “It was a significant shift in the momentum of the spirit of the changes and really truly lacked consultation. It was disappointing for the sector and especially for Ontario Colleges that provide such a vital support for our local industries.”
Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) President Dipal Patel is also quoted in the article sharing the confusion and sense of uncertainty within the student community: “International students bring a lot of value and cultural richness to Canada. International students have also been a significant source of filling labor shortages in Canadian communities. The government should also be focusing on the positive impacts of bringing international students into Canada.”
