On January 24, President Sean Kennedy was interviewed on CKTB to discuss the federal government’s recent decision to put a cap on international student enrollment.
When asked about NC’s response to pressures of the housing shortage, Kennedy said, “We are very committed to ensuring sustainable and reasonable growth within our enrollments because we are very cognizant that additional students from outside Niagara may place pressures upon housing, busing or other public infrastructure. But, we also know there’s great support from employers in our communities across Niagara for those students because they know how critical they are to Niagara’s economy and filling the workforce needs.”
When asked about next steps following this announcement, Kennedy notes that the College aims to push hard working with the federal government to allow for a smoother implementation and more lead time, and to avoid the abrupt impacts that the current announcement without modification would entail.
He adds, “[At] Niagara College we always draw on our trailblazing, collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit, and I know that our teams already are hard at work trying to figure out [next steps]…I always think about it as if we were a GPS system and were told there’s a road closure. In typical Niagara College fashion, we will reroute and find new ways to get to the destination.”
