The spirit of Diwali illuminated the Niagara College community this November, with renowned musician Sh.Subhash Ghosh captivating the audience at two events celebrating Indian culture.

The Diwali Celebration at Marriott on the Falls Hotel in Niagara Falls on November 17 was a complete sensory experience for the 550 NC students, faculty, staff members, and guests who attended. The festivity included a mesmerizing performance by the award-winning Sh. Subhash Ghosh, whose artistry added a sublime touch to the celebration. Following a dinner where attendees savoured flavours of India, a DJ took the stage, and the dance floor came alive.

On November 18, Sh.Subhash Ghosh dazzled the audience at Benchmark Restaurant located at NC’s Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Ghosh’s captivating performance added a unique touch to a culinary experience consisting of an India-inspired three-course menu dinner.

VP International Sean Coote addresses guests at NC’s Diwali Celebration on Nov. 17

“Performing at Niagara College’s events was truly exceptional,” said Ghosh. “The warmth and enthusiasm of the audience, coupled with the vibrant atmosphere, made it a memorable experience for me. Music, being a universal language, has the power to create a sense of unity among people who share a passion for cultural exchange. I hope to share my music with NC students, faculty, and staff again in the future.”

Reflecting on the significance of such cultural events, Sean Coote, NC’s Vice President International expressed his thoughts on the College’s commitment to cultural enrichment.

“Bringing the world to Niagara is integral to our mission of being Canada’s Leading Global College,” said Coote. “Events featuring international artists like Sh.Subhash Ghosh contribute significantly to the cultural enrichment of our community by offering unique and diverse experiences that broaden perspectives and celebrate our global interconnectedness.”

Sh.Subhash Ghosh has not only performed at national and international festivals but has also shared his music in presentations to High Commissioners, Prime Ministers, and Presidents during the course of his career. The artist is known for having invented the unique Sarasvani, a musical instrument that combines the elements of Veena, Sarod, and guitar, all crafted from a single piece of wood. In addition, Sh.Subhash Ghosh has run the Academy of Indian Classical Music and Fine Arts to promote classical music as a social cause to children and youth for over 20 years.

Students and alumni showcase their talents

The event on November 18 was also an opportunity to showcase the talents of NC students and alumni. Under the guidance of Benchmark Chef Justin Downes, School of Culinary Arts students prepared the dinner. In addition, exceptional service was provided by a team of students from the School of Hospitality & Tourism led by Benchmark Events & Catering Manager, Victor Oliveira. Dessert was prepared by the proud alumni Pawan Lulla and Niti Ruparel Lulla, owners of the successful Niagara Falls bakery Bittersweet Symphony.

NC’s Diwali Celebration was sponsored by Simplii Financial, the title sponsor of the event. Earlier this fall, the College announced a $1 million sponsorship from Simplii to expand recreation and engagement opportunities for students, across sports, extra-curricular programming, and events that celebrate NC’s rich cultural diversity.
