The next episode of the College Drop-In podcast shines the spotlight on Niagara College’s School of Community Services.
Jackie Frail, Interim Associate Dean, School of Community Services, and Erin Wilkie, Professor and Program Coordinator, Recreation Therapy, join podcast host Paul Orlando, Economic Development Coordinator, City of Welland, to explore the School’s slate of programs designed to prepare students for careers in vocational areas that enhance the well-being of individuals and families, spanning all ages from young children to the elderly.
Frail and Wilkie discuss how community partnerships are key when teaching students how to support people in a compassionate and fulfilling way. The programs within the School of Community Services offer a range of experiential learning opportunities that enable students to gain essential industry experience to enhance their skills. The opportunities also empower students to see themselves as future practitioners who will help make a difference in their respective fields.
“We are about building community within our classrooms, with our partners, and once students become practitioners in the community,” Frail notes in the episode.
Many community partnerships are highlighted in the episode, including Welland Girls Sports Day. A special mention is also given to nc-TRAC – Niagara College Therapeutic Recreation Activity Collective – a dynamic initiative from the Recreation Therapy program, designed to boost and support the well-being of the whole student and broader community.
