On November 1, the Niagara College Human Resources team hosted 25 grade nine students for Take Your Kids to Work Day.
The parents of the high school students are NC employees from various areas of the College. Six students attended at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus, and 19 at the Welland campus, where they engaged with faculty and staff and took part in various demonstrations and hands-on activities.
Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake
The students visited the Teaching Greenhouse where they created a planter with a variety of succulents. The stop included a tour of the facility to learn about several different growing methods.
Students also toured Research & Innovation, exploring the Food and Beverage Innovation Centre where they crafted two varieties of pop of their choice. They learned about hops analysis and how various testing is completed.
Welland Campus
At the Welland Campus, students toured the Athletics Centre, including the fitness center, and learned about intramurals and varsity sports. Students had a chance to play a game of volleyball and basketball on the Knights’ home court.
A stop at the Broadcasting program facilities was next on tour. Students explored the mobile broadcasting truck, visited the radio and broadcasting control room, and learned about recent broadcasts in which NC students were at the helm.
In the School of Trades, students saw a metal-cutting demo and learned about the variety of cutting and grinding machines utilized in the trades. They also learned from faculty in Motive Power in the engine, transmission, and tire labs. Students were impressed by the electric vehicle truck conversion project and viewed a Tesla light show. Finally, they toured the photonics lab to learn about this in-demand career path.
The program was led by Marie Mesic, Nicky Romanelli, Carissa Tirpko, and Rebecca Coleman, as well as faculty and staff from various program areas. Thanks to all those who made the day a success!
