On the heels of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenous students at Niagara College are raising awareness of a movement to help Indgenous families find their missing loved ones.

An educational event will be held on Tuesday, October 10. It is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Welland Campus (on the lawn in front of the Applied Health Institute). The event will include drumming, singing and round dance as a show of support for the Search the Landfill movement.

The event was initiated by students in the My Path of Worthwhile Educational Re-Engagement (MPOWER)  program and supported by the College’s Indigenous Education staff.

“This awareness and educational event is important to the Niagara College community because it means NC continues to work on creating a safe place for our Indigenous student voices and their truths to be heard, giving students the confidence to share what is important to them and why it should be important to all of us,” said Shanyn Porter, Community Access Program Manager, Workforce Development. “This peaceful gathering is just one example of what the MPOWER program hopes to achieve, by consciously working hard every day to build trust with the community, empowering our students to feel valued, that they matter and that NC genuinely welcomes and needs their contributions, to help us all better understand the truth, for the sake of reconciliation.”

In late September, the College hosted a variety of initiatives in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. View: College initiatives honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
