CHCH: Niagara College, Brock develop virtual reality tool to educate about ableism

On September 28, CHCH released a segment and article announcing that Niagara College and Brock University have partnered to create a virtual reality tool to help students understand the lived experiences of those with disabilities on post-secondary campuses.

The coverage highlights that the project was developed and tested by Niagara College professors Theresa Anzovino and Jamie Oresar, as well as Brock’s Dr. Maureen Connolly.

Oresar and NC’s Adaptive Technology Specialist, Jim McEwen are interviewed in the segment, explaining the advantages of VR and the different simulations in which students can experience to better understand ableism.

McEwen is also quoted in the article: “As NC employees with disabilities, it was important to us that the simulations be centered on authentic lived experiences of the disability community. Using the power of immersive VR, for a moment, you are able to get a firsthand glimpse of how ableism, microaggressions, and systemic obstacles can affect people with disabilities.”
