On May 1, 2023, a group of 45 students began a new and fully funded pre-apprenticeship training program at Niagara College, made possible thanks to over $800,000 in provincial funding to help tackle Ontario’s historic labour shortage.

The funding was announced by the Province of Ontario on August 21, showcasing a new pathway to meaningful and lucrative careers in the skilled trades. The program is also welcome news to employers in various sectors of the economy who are looking to hire.

“The pre-apprenticeship program at Niagara College is an exciting opportunity for those who may have considered a career in the skilled trades, but faced barriers to take the next steps,” said Fiona Allan, Academic Vice-President at Niagara College.

The funding will cover tuition, training materials, tools, personal protective equipment, employer wage subsidies and more.

“Students are benefiting from hands-on training in a supportive environment followed by a paid work placement and industry mentorship,” said Vice-President Allan. “The program is providing eager job seekers a chance to secure long-term employment, and a win for local employers in need of skilled tradespeople.”

This spring, 15 students in each of the three streams – Automotive Service Technician, Electrician – Construction and Maintenance, and Industrial Millwright Mechanic – embarked on the 45-week program designed with a wholistic approach to career preparation.

The program blends academic upgrading and job readiness with in-class theory and industry-lab exposure.

The training culminates with a paid, eight-week work placement in which students receive mentorship from industry professionals.

“Niagara College is grateful for this provincial investment which will support the key role that Niagara College plays in meeting the needs of industry and employers, and training students for in-demand careers as apprentices in the skilled trades,” said Sean Kennedy, President of Niagara College.

“We know in-demand jobs in the skilled trades and other critical sectors continue to grow and this important funding helps local postsecondary institutions like Niagara College close the skills gap,” said Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West, in the provincial release.

Admission to the first intake has now closed. Those interested in receiving information about pre-apprenticeship training and to be considered for future program offerings can fill out the ‘How to apply’ form on our website. Pending funding approval, more information will be sent in early spring 2024.
