A message from Craig Youdale, Dean, Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies:
On June 30, Peter Blakeman will be retiring from his role as Chef Professor at Niagara College.
In the role of professor, one tends to dedicate themself to their main craft while also trying to learn more about the world around you. I am not sure there is anyone more dedicated to learning new things than our infamous Chef Professor, Peter Blakeman.
Peter is wrapping up a 38-year career in teaching and is known across Canada for his devoted dedication to his students.
Peter and I first met in Graduate School at Guelph University, and during the end of our time there he was teaching at Niagara College. From the moment we met, I knew he was someone I connected with and who possessed a sincere dedication to education. His passion toward student progress and support stemmed early on in his career and he carried this passion with him throughout the entirety of his NC journey.
Peter has made a prominent impact at NC and in the Culinary, Tourism and Beverage Studies division. He has taught almost every course in our Culinary programs and has held many positions, including his role as Chair of the Hospitality and Culinary Division for two years. Peter pioneered wine education among our culinary students alongside Chef Albert Cypryk and has grown CULN 1423 into a signature course in the program.
Among Peter’s many accomplishments, I believe his legacy lies in the several contributions to NC’s Culinary programs. Peter always dedicated personal time to students and the College, from his pilgrimage to the County each spring, supporting Skills Canada, judging at the High School competition, to ladling up soup at a local shelter.
Peter has always been committed to fostering respect for the profession and modeling a true professional. We will miss him dearly.
Thank you, Peter.
