This is the last of a series of three articles about student experiences during the Spring 2023 Be World Ready (BWR) program’s International Field Studies (IFS).

Niagara College students enjoyed remarkable learning experiences on two Be World Ready (BWR) International Field Studies (IFS) trips to Germany during the spring break.

The Hallo Deutschland trip, from April 23 to May 2, included tours of Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg. One of the highlights was visiting Weltenburg Monastery, the oldest monastery brewery in the world, and the Aecht Schlenkerla Brewery in Bamberg, known for its traditional Rauchbier (smoked beer).

“We had a chance to gain some valuable hands-on experiences in a country known for the finest examples of beer,” said second-year Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management student Jenny Lukasiewicz. “Drinking Rauchbier fresh off the tank after sampling the same beer in our Sensory Evaluation of World Beers class was exceptional.”

Students from other programs also enjoyed invaluable opportunities to get world-ready and work-ready during the BWR IFS trip.

“It was a great opportunity to sharpen my mobile photo and video shoots,” said second-year Broadcasting – Radio, Television and Film (Film Production) student David Mutrux. “Capturing moments with minimum gear outside the studio in a real-life scenario and practicing it while travelling was an amazing experience that will ultimately help me when creating content.”

The Global Education itinerary, from May 4 to 14,  took students through Frankfurt, Bremerhaven, and Osnabrück, where the group also had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend educational sessions at one of NC’s academic partners, the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück.

“This was my first time outside of North America, so I was most excited about experiencing a new culture,” said fourth-year Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (Human Resources) student Madison Emery, who completed a course in Sustainable Development for Project Management at Osnabrück during the trip. “We had a very diverse group of students which allowed our work to reflect many different perspectives and backgrounds.”

These opportunities are funded in part by Global Skills Opportunity, the Government of Canada’s Outbound Student Mobility Pilot Program.
