Grad spotlight 2023: Dean’s Award winner Jennifer Netchay

Jennifer Netchay’s love of the outdoors made choosing NC’s Landscape Technician Program easy.

After working for nearly 20 years as a registered nurse, Netchay said it was time to try something different, so she decided to learn more about a subject matter she’s always enjoyed.

“I’ve always been interested in landscape design and completing this program has only intensified that,” Netchay said. “I particularly like the design aspect of landscaping (because) no two design projects are alike. Overcoming challenges to reach a design that fits all of the client’s needs and is aesthetically pleasing gives a sense of accomplishment.”

Netchay, who graduates on June 13, is this year’s Dean’s Award winner for the School of Environment and Horticulture Studies. But she gives her instructors the bulk of the credit for her success.

“It was evident throughout the program that the teachers are dedicated to the success of their students and share a passion for the material they teach,” she said. “The professors and instructors of the Landscape Technician Program deserve much of the credit.”

Although developing stronger landscape design skills was her intent when she registered at NC, Netchay said she didn’t limit herself to any particular career goal so she could remain open to unexpected opportunities.

That’s why she’s working both in landscape/garden maintenance in Niagara-on-the-Lake and doing residential garden design on the side.

“This gives me the opportunity to work outside and gain experience as well as pursue an aspect of landscaping that I really enjoy.

“I find that, for me, setting specific goals can lead to missed opportunities.  I prefer instead to begin with an area of interest and keep my options open. Something may come along that would be a perfect fit that I may never have even considered.”

Congratulations to Netchay and to all graduating students this week!
