Niagara College welcomed federal and provincial officials to campus on March 31

On March 31, Niagara College hosted two government visits at the Welland Campus.

In the morning, the Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Seniors and Chris Bittle, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Member of Parliament for St. Catharines, met with NC students and President Sean Kennedy to discuss the new Canadian Dental Care Plan and how it will benefit up to nine million Canadians across the country.

During the visit, President Kennedy shared that Niagara College has a long history of providing high-quality dental programs, where NC students learn in a clinic that provides care to people in the community who need it – “we are proponents of dental health and welcome the federal government’s work to expand access to dental care for all Canadians.”

In the afternoon, MPP Niagara West Sam Oosterhoff visited NC’s Rankin Technology Centre to announce a provincial investment in technology programs for 2022-23 which is supporting the purchase of leading-edge instructional equipment and learning resources to prepare graduates for lucrative, in-demand careers in technology.

Niagara College President Sean Kennedy, MPP Niagara West Sam Oosterhoff, Welland Mayor Frank Campion and Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley with students in NC’s School of Technology. MPP Oosterhoff visit NC on March 31 to announce provincial match funding for the College for 2022-23 to support leading edge instructional equipment to train skilled graduates for the careers of tomorrow.

The provincial grant of $825,000, matched by the college’s contribution of $829,560, brought the total project cost to $1,654,560. The funding supports a substantial upgrade and is creating new interactive learning opportunities for students, benefitting students in a broad range of fields including electrical, electronics and mechanical engineering, and renewable energies.

Niagara Regional Chair Jim Bradley and Welland Mayor Frank Campion attended and brought remarks, as well as Brock University President and Vice-Chancellor Lesley Rigg who also received provincial funding. Following the announcement, MPP Oosterhoff had a chance to tour the technology labs with current students and faculty to see some of the new equipment in action.

The state-of-the-art equipment includes an industry-standard PLC workstations, process automation stations, mechatronics workstations and mixed-reality headsets.

NC President Sean Kennedy provided remarks, and both events were attended by Vice-President Academic, Fiona Allan, Vice-President Advancement Gord Arbeau, and Vice President Research, Innovation & Strategic Enterprises, Marc Nantel.
