This is the first of a series of three articles about students’ experiences during the Winter 2023 Be World Ready (BWR) program’s International Field Studies (IFS).
Niagara College students had a life-changing experience while strengthening their global citizenship during the Be World Ready (BWR) International Field Study (IFS) trip to Puerto Rico this winter reading week.
With the Caribbean country still recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria in 2017, students participated in community rebuilding efforts during the Puerto Rico – Helping Hands trip.
“The connection we have built with the community is phenomenal,” said Michael Kilgour, a second-year Carpentry and Renovation Technician student. “It is heartwarming to witness the positive impact made on the residents and vice-versa. The construction work we did also aligns with my program area, making me feel more world-ready moving forward in my career.”
Students have also enjoyed rich cultural experiences, streams among the mountains, and pristine beaches. For many students, some of the best moments were also those they shared with the local community.

Student Leah Suk says the Be World Ready trip has changed her life.
“After each day, the locals we helped would share their appreciation of us, making our work all the more special,” said Michael Leblanc, an Electrical Techniques student. “I want to volunteer again somewhere else in the world, but Puerto Rico has a special place in my heart now that I have met all the friendly people and have made meaningful connections. This was my first time leaving Canada and being away from home for so long, but this trip has made me feel more world-ready to pursue similar opportunities in the future.”
The BWR IFS trip spoke to NC student Leah Suk on a meaningful level. She chose Puerto Rico because some of the activities were related to her program area (Environmental Technician – Field and Laboratory program) but she never imagined how much this decision would positively impact her life.
“When I signed up for this trip I was terrified because I am not a particularly social person,” said Suk. “There was something special about the group and the place that made me open up and want to engage. I never thought I would be able to partake in something like this trip, but this experience showed me I am capable, and I had the absolute best time of my life.”
“It was fascinating to watch students transform right in front of me during this life-changing trip,” said Pharmacy Program Assistant Michael Shelton, one of the Puerto Rico trip leaders, along with Laurie McPherson, Executive Assistant for the Vice President International, and Julian Ledonne, School of Trades Professor.
