This is the first of a series of three articles on the upcoming Be World Ready (BWR) program’s International Field Studies (IFS).

As Be World Ready (BWR) International Field Studies (IFS) trip leaders, NC faculty and staff share unforgettable and life-changing experiences with students while benefiting from professional and personal development opportunities.

One of the upcoming destinations during the winter break is Portugal, a country that brings together old cultural traditions and groundbreaking technology. NC Accessibility Consultant Isabela Silveira is excited to participate in the Portugal – Sun, Sea & History trip as one of the three IFS leads for the trip.

“I am looking forward to this adventure and the opportunity to connect with students and Portugal residents,” said Silveira. “Cultural diversity helps us develop a greater understanding and respect for various cultures and our own; it broadens our minds and increases tolerance. These travel opportunities promote inclusivity and dispel negative stereotypes.”

The itinerary includes visiting historical landmarks such as the Tower of Belém and Jerónimo’s Monastery, enjoying delicious food and wine, and attending educational sessions about business and the promising start-up ecosystem that positions Portugal among the most innovative European countries.

While abroad, IFS trip leads act as ambassadors for NC and support student coordination, logistics, and inquiries. The opportunity to engage with students is one of the most motivating factors for NC faculty and staff when applying to be IFS trip leaders.

“I was motivated to get involved to meet more of our students and learn about their experiences,” said Ian Smith, Global Business Development Department and Customer Relationship Management User Support Specialist. “I hope to help contribute to NC’s goal of engaging, celebrating, and bringing together diverse cultures to prepare world-ready graduates.”

Before the trip, the BWR team provides all necessary information and training to leaders and students, including organizing travel arrangements, scheduling information sessions, coordinating social gatherings, and answering questions.

“By promoting these trips, NC is allowing us to create a lifetime memories,” said Christal Langerak, Student Services Administrative Coordinator, who is another trip lead. “I have already made impactful connections with the other leads and the students taking part in this trip, and look forward to making more meaningful memories.”
