This is the third of a series of three articles on the upcoming Be World Ready (BWR) program’s International Field Studies (IFS).
Niagara College staff and faculty have impactful professional and personal development experiences as Be World Ready (BWR) International Field Studies (IFS) trip leads while supporting students in strengthening their global citizenship.
The Dominican Republic is one of the BWR IFS destinations this upcoming winter break. During the trip, leads will be able to expand their perspective and enrich NC students’ lives through education and community development.
“I am excited to lead a group of students in their journey of gaining unique skills that will set them apart in a globalized world,” said Orel Ruiz, Director, Global Campus Operations, Compliance and Reporting, who is one of the two leads for the trip. “Through this amazing and carefully curated cultural experience, students will become well-rounded global citizens by engaging in various community outreach efforts.”
Besides colonial cities and tropical beaches, the Dominican Republic – Colonial Discoveries itinerary includes visits to the Puntacana Foundation, a pioneer organization in advocating for sustainable development in the Dominican Republic, and to the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, one of the first universities established in the Western Hemisphere.
Participants will also have the chance to create a lasting impact in the community by participating in the Pack for a Purpose initiative, where they will drop off school supplies donated by the NC community to two schools while engaging with teaching staff in various activities.
“Being a faculty in the School of Hospitality and Tourism allows us to bring the world into our classrooms said Professor Christine Blane, who is also leading the IFS. “Our itinerary is rich, and we will learn about sustainability, biodiversity, tourism, and culture, all of which relate to our various programs and classes.”
BWR IFS experiences are available during NC’s fall, winter, and spring break weeks, and present an opportunity for NC faculty and staff to lead trips. The BWR team provides trip leads with training for their roles and responsibilities in supporting student success abroad.
“I appreciate the detailed training sessions that help ensure adequate preparation for this trip, since for some students it is their first time travelling internationally,” said Ruiz. “I am confident that I will be able to leverage my extensive travel experience to support students with travel tips and ensure this trip is as safe and enriching as possible.”
