On Dec. 9, students from the Fitness and Health Promotion program at Niagara College provided individualized exercise training to Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant students.

“This project was able to provide the unique opportunity for a cross program collaboration with the OTA/PTA students,” said Carrie Schachtschneider, Professor for the Fitness and Health Promotion program. “Our Fitness and Health students were able to gain hands on experience through the creation of an individualized exercise plan, followed by a training session and OTA/PTA students furthered their knowledge in the area of exercise which will help them in their future careers.”

Second year student, Elizabeth Penner, made the most of this opportunity to put the skills she learned in the classroom into practice in a fun, and collaborative environment.

“What made this such a great experience was that I was able to use the skills that I had been learning throughout the semester in a practical way, taking everything I was taught and being able to apply it in real-time with a real client was such an incredible opportunity that further readied me for my future.”

Students who participated in this cross-collaboration provided feedback to their peers which will help the students in the Fitness and Health Promotion program prepare for regular training sessions in the winter term as part of their Personal Training course.
