Niagara College continues to support the Celebration of Nations as the indigenous arts gathering returns to downtown St. Catharines, for its sixth year, September 9-11.
Hosted by the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (the PAC), the 2022 event includes diverse offerings of Indigenous music, dance, film and traditional arts, as well as workshops and speakers. A sacred fire will be held in the PAC backyard all weekend with sunrise ceremonies, traditional food, vendors, performances and teachings.
Associate Director, Indigenous Education at NC, Leah Hogan encourages the College community to attend.
“Celebration of Nations is important as it strengthens our community through learning and artistic expression. Our artists, performers, storytellers, songwriters, and musicians come together to celebrate culture and the diversity of First Nation, Métis and Inuit people,” said Hogan. “We encourage the NC community to support by joining the celebrations starting this weekend.”
Niagara College is a sponsor of the 2022 Celebration of Nations.
Tickets have also been purchased for a marquee concert featuring legendary Indigenous icon Buffy Sainte-Marie (September 10) giving a group of NC Indigenous students an opportunity to attend.
Celebration of Nations 2022
The theme for this year’s Celebration of Nations is, ‘Honouring Our Matriarchs: Restoring The Balance.’
“We are thrilled for the opportunity to gather again as a community at the PAC to share an exceptional program of Indigenous artists and knowledge keepers,” said Artistic Director Michele-Elise Burnett In the PAC’s news release. “Year six offers an opportunity to raise up the voices of our Indigenous matriarchs, to heed their wisdom and to restore balance to the world again.”
2022 programming includes more than 40 in-person events at the PAC as well as many virtual participation options. Along with ticketed events, there will be a variety of free as well as pay-what-you-can initiatives.
