The recent retirement of Director Ralph Scholz has provided an opportunity to review the current structure of the Facilities Management Services (FMS) department to ensure that it supports the current and future needs of NC and aligns with the long-term goals of the College Operations Division and our college – including the areas of focus and action items identified in the new 2022-2027 Strategic Plan.
FMS is one of the College’s largest departments, with responsibility for over 1.5 million square feet of building space, more than 100 acres of grounds, energy management, sustainability, building and office moves, project planning including major capital projects, ancillary services including events, office moves, and contracted services including foodservices, printing and mail services and the College residences.
Given the growing complexity and scope of the FMS’s work and the evolving needs and strategic direction of the College, FMS will be split into two departments: Planning, Sustainability and Capital Projects, and Facilities Management and Campus Safety.
As part of this reorganization, the Campus Safety team will move to the new Facilities Management and Campus Safety department, which will also include operations and maintenance at both campuses, groundskeeping at the Welland Campus, ancillary services, and lease management.
The Planning, Sustainability and Capital Projects Department will bring together project management, sustainability, energy and asset management, and major capital planning and projects.
This new structure aligns with the new Strategic Plan and supports specific action items including the creation of vibrant learning and living spaces, the development of a culture of sustainability, and the evolution of our campus operations and services to meet the needs of students now and in the future.
The recruitment process to hire the Directors and a newly created Associate Director of Maintenance and Operations is under development, with the anticipation of further recruitment for vacant and new positions moving forward.
Brian Hughes will continue to lead the FMS department as Interim Director until the new Director positions are in place.
