Two faculty members from the School of Business and Management will be retiring at the end of June: Malcolm Howe and Mary Ann Lesperance. Please view the retirement notices below submitted by their Associate Deans.
Retirement notice: Malcolm Howe

Message from Adam Weaver, Associate Dean, School of Business and Management:
Malcolm Howe is retiring from the School of Business and Management at the end of June after a distinguished teaching career. He joined Niagara College in 1992. During his tenure, he has served as a program coordinator for the Business Administration-Marketing program. His leadership has contributed to the strong standing of this program at NC. Malcolm’s valued leadership extends to a foundational marketing principles course. That course – as well as others – bears his imprint: rigor, relevance to current practice, and pedagogy devoted to student engagement.
Malcolm’s career has had many highlights. He was the recipient of the 2017 Niagara Champions Award. This award acknowledges his dedication to student recruitment: his sharing of his enthusiasm for NC with prospective students. Malcolm’s efforts in the domain of student recruitment are exemplary. The award recognizes the ambassadorial role he has played, being an advocate for the College in the broadest sense and not only promoting the courses and programs with which he was affiliated. Malcolm’s wider contributions also include his past work with NC Research & Innovation.

Summarizing Malcolm’s career at NC would be incomplete without reference to the Ontario Colleges’ Marketing Competition (OCMC). With colleagues, Malcolm has invested a great deal of himself – professionally and personally – into preparing students for this competition. OCMC, for Malcolm, was much more than an exercise in winning awards (though, many student participants have won noteworthy awards along the way). The competition is about teaching students to fulfill their own potential. Competing against other Ontario colleges was therefore a means to help students achieve more significant, longer-lasting objectives that would prepare them for their careers. Malcolm’s achievements in this regard are undeniable.
Cycling, for those who know Malcolm, is vitally important to him. He plans to continue cycling – and to continue writing about it in retirement. Malcolm is the author of highly regarded mountain biking guidebooks. We wish Malcolm “happy (biking) trails” as he peddles forward, and as we celebrate a teaching career that has had a positive impact on so many colleagues and students.
Retirement notice: Mary Ann Lesperance

A message from Lisa Mendez, Associate Dean, School of Business and Management:
Mary Ann Lesperance is retiring from the School of Business and Management at the end of June after a distinguished teaching career. Mary Ann joined NC in December 2005 following years of Human Resource experience in both the public and private sectors. Just prior to joining, she ran her own consulting business with clients that included Novartis Pharma Canada, TD Bank, Rogers Cablesystems, The University Health Network, the Regional Municipality of Niagara, and Towers Perrin.
Teaching has been her passion. She takes pride in having provided applied learning opportunities for students by tapping into her NC Human Resources alumni and business networks. Throughout her career at the College, Mary Ann has been a strong contributor to the HR faculty and student community. She was connected to the HR@NC student association by supporting many of the networking events such as the annual Alumni and Employer Appreciation events and using her industry connections to facilitate guest speakers. During her tenure at NC, Mary Ann has supported, mentored, and educated a generation of HR professionals.
Mary Ann holds her CHRP designation, and a Masters of Science in International Human Resource Management and Training from Leicester University, England. She has been an active member of the HRPA, SHRM, and the Academy of Management.
Upon retirement, Mary Ann will pursue opportunities in HR consulting and training, and continue her research and writing of management books. She is also excited to grow her watercolour stationery and art business, while enjoying spending time with her puppy, Lilly. She is grateful for the many wonderful NC colleagues, students, and friends she has worked with over the years. We all wish Mary Ann well, as we celebrate her contributions to the College.
