Reporter Zahraa Hmood’s article about people’s changing relationship to the natural world includes commentary from NC Ecosystem Restoration Professor and Program Coordinator Martin Smith.
In the article, which ran in the Niagara Dailies and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Advance on February 24, Smith comments on the correlation between more time spent outdoors and education about environmental issues. He comments, “You can give people a place or a point where they can start asking questions. But you got to get them out there in the first place, looking and seeing.”
Smith also noted that with people spending more time at home over the last two years, he’s seen a reluctance to getting back outside. “For people to gain confidence and come back out, that’s going to take a bit of time,” he said in the article.
