November Indigenous Awareness Month events celebrate culture, encourage dialogue
With Indigenous Awareness Month underway, NC’s Indigenous Education department invites students, staff and faculty to engage with, learn about and celebrate Indigenous cultures and history through a variety of events planned this month.

Reminder: Living Library with Tracey Deer, Director and Co-writer of Beans

A highlight of the month is the Nov. 24 Living Library Zoom event from 2-4 p.m. with Tracey Deer, Director and Co-writer of the award-winning film Beans, which shines the spotlight on the turbulent Indigenous uprising that tore Quebec and Canada apart for 78 days during the Oka Crisis in 1990.

For those who missed the screening of Beans at the PAC on Nov. 4, there’s still time to view the film ahead of the Nov. 24 Living Library event. All NC staff and students have free and convenient access to the film through ncLibraries by visiting media3-criterionpic com.proxy.library.niagarac.on.ca/htbin/wwform/006/wwt770?kw=beans – simply enter your myNC login details to access the film.

Indigenous Education and the ncLibraries and Learning Commons are excited to announce that Karl Dockstader from the One Dish, One Mic radio program will be joining the event to lead the conversation about the film’s important messages on treaty rights and relationships.

Please register for the event through the Indigenous Education website. The event is open to all students, staff and faculty, as well as the community – please consider sharing the registration details within your networks to encourage participation. A direct Zoom link will be circulated via Campus Notice email for you to share also.

Louis Riel Day flag-raising ceremonies

On November 16, Niagara College will join communities in Niagara and across Canada in raising the Métis flag to mark Louis Riel Day. Louis Riel is honoured in Canada on this day as it is the anniversary of the Red River Resistance and Riel’s unjust execution in 1885 for defending the rights of the Métis people.

A flag-raising ceremony will take place at the Welland Campus at 8:15 a.m. and at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake at 8:30 a.m.

Later that morning at 10 a.m., Indigenous Education will be handing out Métis sash-making kits and hot chocolate in the Indigenous Garden at the Welland Campus. All students and employees are welcome to stop by the Garden to pick up a kit. Note: registration is not required to pick up a kit, although kits are limited.
