A message from Facilities Management Services:

Beginning Monday, October 18, contractors began clearing trees at the southeast corner of the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The area will be the site of a new agri-yard development which will include a fenced compound and hoop houses. The project is expected to be complete by spring 2022.

The new agri-yard will be the future home of the Horticulture Technician program. Students will use this area as part of the outdoor living lab. The site will feature a small tree nursery, hoop houses for nursery production class, and a fenced yard to demonstrate landscape techniques. It will also be used to store landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment.

Tree removal will be complete between the end of October and early November. As part of the project, the College has worked with the Niagara Escarpment Commission to develop a plan to replant new trees. Staff at NC’s Teaching Greenhouse will lead the future replanting effort, from identifying which tree species to plant, and ways to involve students in the replanting efforts.

A number of investigations have been undertaken as part of the approval process for this development including an archaeological assessment, tree assessment, and a bird nesting study. The tree assessment has led to the identification of vegetated areas that need to be protected during construction.
