The Centre for Academic Excellence invites faculty, staff and administration to mark their calendars for the 2021 Spotlight on Teaching and Learning Conference on October 26 and 27.
This virtual event will take place over two days and will feature speakers from NC and beyond who will share innovative ideas and personal experiences that support teaching and learning.
Over 25 NC educators will profile their innovative teaching practices and touch on a variety of topics, including e-learning best practices, local, national and international collaborations, student engagement, simulation technology, emotional intelligence, and more.
The fall conference will be delivered via Whova, an engaging virtual platform with innovative ways to network and share ideas, including virtual round tables, games and polls.
Keynote sessions
Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe – Resiliency and Wellness in Uncertain Times
Described as one of the most sought-after, engaging, and thought-provoking international speakers and scholars in her field, Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe is a multi-award-winning education and psychology instructor and resiliency expert with over 13 years of teaching and research experience at Trent University. Dr. Hanley-Dafoe lives in Peterborough with her husband Jeff and their three children. This event is open to both students and staff.
With stress, uncertainty, and unrest at a record high, Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe’s message is both inspirational and practical. This interactive and engaging presentation helps participants regain a sense of order in ever-changing times and learn how to establish new daily routines to increase productivity and decrease overwhelm.
Dr. Johanne McCarthy – Decolonization in Action in the College Classroom
Dr. McCarthy, Onondaga Nation, Beaver clan from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, is a happy mother of two, an activist for community healing, a Naturopathic Doctor, and a Teaching and Learning Consultant for Indigenous Education at Mohawk College. Dr. McCarthy holds a Master of Organizational Leadership with an ancestral purpose and mission to transform and decolonize systems and institutions founded upon Indigenous oppression and genocide. With over 20 years of experience as a front-line health care provider and 11 years experience in post-secondary education, she has become an expert in motivating healthy change for the coming faces of our future generations.
Modeling antiracism is an active and ongoing process for faculty requiring us to dig deep and reflect upon what we feel and know to be true. The first step to building an antiracist classroom is recognizing the power imbalances that exist systemically to perpetuate oppressive relationships. Participants in this workshop will learn how to support decolonization in action, thereby modeling antiracism teaching behaviors in the college classroom to nurture socially just and inclusive futures.
