NC's Office of Sustainability is hosting an Instagram Earth Hour celebration.

It’s time to flip the switch when it comes to energy use.

In advance of Earth Hour – Saturday, March 27, from 8:30-9:30 p.m. – NC’s Office of Sustainability is hosting an Instagram celebration aimed at sparking discussions around energy use and light pollution. To help raise awareness about both, the College community is encouraged to tag @SustainbilityNC in a photo of the night sky as part of the initiative, which began March 21 and will continue until Earth Hour.

Sustainability program and outreach coordinator Amber Schmucker noted the importance of marking Earth Hour as a College community.

“As a Living Planet @ Campus partner, we feel it’s important to celebrate our partnership whenever possible and Earth Hour is part of that,” said Schmucker. “Energy consumption and the implications surrounding it are also not as easy to engage in because it’s not always something that we see. An event that celebrates turning off our lights and electronics for an hour is impactful because it is visual.”

Those who participate in the Instagram Earth Hour celebration will be eligible to win a $25-grocery gift card. The winner will be randomly selected among all social media entries received and will be notified via Instagram.

In addition to the social media celebration, the Office of Sustainability reminds the College community to participate in Earth Hour by turning off all of their lights and electronics. Learn more about suggested ways to mark Earth Hour.

About Earth Hour

Started by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights out event in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the largest grassroots movements for the environment in the world. It is held every year on the last Saturday in March. Beyond the symbolic action of switching off, Earth Hour has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people and collective action.
