Message from Vincent Shaikh, dean, Media, Trades and Technology:
It is with mixed emotions that I announce the well-deserved retirement of Linda Roote, associate dean, School of Media Studies. After 22 years of outstanding service and dedication to Niagara College, Linda’s last day will be April 27, 2021. While we wish her the best in her new adventures, she will be truly missed by the College community.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Linda sincerely for her numerous and varied contributions to Niagara College’s success over the years. While it’s challenging to sum up Linda’s notable career dedicated to both teaching and program development and success, the following summary provides some insight into the significant impact that she has had on the college.
Linda joined Niagara College in 1999 as a professor in the Interactive Multimedia program and played a key role in the development of the New Media Web Design program. Linda became coordinator when the program was launched in 2006. In 2014, she was seconded to the role of associate dean of Media Studies and in 2016 accepted the permanent position. In this role, Linda has provided oversight to significant projects that include the planning and launch of the Marilyn I. Walker Centre of Excellence in Visual Arts & Technology, developing a print centre for the Graphic Design program, major program modifications to Broadcasting, Radio, Television and Film (BRTF), Graphic Design programs, and Computer Systems Technician programs (Network to Cloud Technologies), developing and launching the joint NC/Brock Game Design and Game Programming degree/diploma programs and creating a distinctive brand for the School of Media programs. Under her leadership, the School of Media has seen significant growth.
Linda has participated in various key initiatives, in and outside the College, including the Blackboard roll out, merging of the web and programming curriculum and the establishment of nGen. Linda introduced the partnership with Stratagem and Niagara College and over the years she has offered her expertise and knowledge on the e-learning committee, Innovate Niagara advisory committee and the Heads of Media Arts and Design (HOMAD) committee. Prior to joining Niagara College, Linda held various positions in industry, as a web developer at Tri-Media Marketing, work readiness manager at Hutton House, and human resources and operations manager at The Bay.
Linda is well-respected and has been a strong advocate for our students, working tirelessly with faculty to secure new academic experiences and opportunities focused on student success. She has been a dedicated member of the Media, Trades and Technology family and has had a profound impact on our school/division. She will always be valued and remembered for being a huge champion and making significant contributions to the school while offering expertise and wise counsel to those around her. It is sad to see her leave, but I am excited for her as she embarks on this new adventure.
Retirement holds excitement for Linda as she plans to spend time with her family – Kevin, Josie, Spencer and Little (the cat) – time at the cottage, and looks forward to travel and some home renovations.
Please join us in wishing Linda the very best in her well-deserved retirement.
