A message from Hafsah Shaikh, manager of Student Rights and Responsibilities
I am very pleased to announce that Katlyn Smith joined the Student Rights & Responsibilities Office as Niagara College’s new sexual violence prevention & response coordinator as of January 20, 2021.
Katlyn joins NC from the Women’s Place of South Niagara, where she has worked for over 10 years in a variety of roles including women’s intervention advocate and most recently as a child & youth advocate, where she provided crisis intervention support to clients at the shelter. Katlyn has also worked as a hospital response worker at the Niagara Sexual Assault Centre where she provided crisis support to individuals impacted by sexual violence. Katlyn holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Brock University.
As the part-time sexual violence prevention & response coordinator, Katlyn will employ a trauma informed and survivor centered approach to develop a comprehensive college response for students impacted by sexual violence. Specifically, she will respond to disclosures and reports of incidents related to sexual violence and provide a safe, supportive, inclusive, and non-judgmental space for students. She will also develop, implement, and sustain robust sexual violence awareness programming and initiatives at all NC campuses, aimed at fostering a culture of zero tolerance toward sexual violence.
Please join me in giving Katlyn a warm welcome to Niagara College, and wishing her well in her new role!
