The newest collaborative student space at Niagara College’s Welland Campus has been recognized for its outstanding interior design.

The Student Commons, designed by Toronto-based architecture and interior design studio, Gow Hastings Architects – was recently presented the top award for interior design by Loop Design Awards. Currently in its first year, Loop Design Awards mission is to become one of the most prestigious and recognized international awards in architecture and interior design.

Completed in 2018, the Niagara College Student Commons is a 35,000 square foot, two story hub that was part of a $15 million addition and renovation to the Welland Campus Simcoe building. The space features a bold branding program and extensive glazing that enables natural light and external views to enhance the student experience.

The unique space includes a cafeteria, retail space, activity room, welcome centre and open spaces for learning and study, with hotel-style amenities such as super-scaled LED monitors and a gas fireplace. The addition also provides the College with an alternative entrance and backdrop of curved perforated metal panels that read ‘Niagara College Canada,’ giving students a sense of place and point of pride.

The Loop Design Award marks the fourth award for the space, which has also received the SBID award, Interior Designers of Canada Value of Design Award, and Canadian Interiors Magazine 2018 Best of Canada Design Competition.
