The SOAR Post-Secondary Program, accompanied by a series of caregiver workshops, aims to ease the transition to post-secondary by equipping students with the necessary skills to navigate their new school environment and advocate for their learning needs. The goal is to foster strong socio-emotional skills to set them up for success.
In SOAR, Niagara students in grades 11 and 12 work on identifying their individual strengths and areas of improvement, communicating their needs, and developing strategies to prepare for a positive transition from high school. Sessions are taught using a combination of discussion, instruction, and engaging activities.
Two staff members from Niagara College’s Accessibility Services are guest presenters in the program, which runs through the Learning Disability Association of Niagara Region (LDANR).
Kate Wiley will present “An Introduction to Accommodations in Post-Secondary Education” on Monday, Oct. 26 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Jim McEwen will present “Assistive Technology at Post-Secondary” on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
SOAR sessions run from until Dec. 7, 2020.
