Jon Downing wants to see your best beer photos on social media on Wednesday.
The Niagara College Brewmaster also wants to know what you love about Canadian beer.
Downing made the ask in a video promoting Canadian Beer Day, a national celebration of all things suds, and the people who make, sell, deliver, serve and drink beer. He was one of several industry representatives in the video, which talks about the economic impact of brewing in Canada, and encourages people to support it by raising a glass on Oct. 7.
There are 150,000 jobs connected to the Canadian beer industry, including 1,100 brewers, and those who work in restaurants and hospitality, beer retail, agriculture and transportation. Still, the entire industry was hit hard by the pandemic as restaurants were forced to close and then scale back operations upon re-opening with various levels of service.
Brewers are encouraging Canadians to visit local breweries, or order curbside pickup or delivery. In addition, they’re asking people to support three key actions: giving bars and restaurants the tools and supports to stay in business; delaying beer tax increases to help businesses recover from COVID-19; and making it possible for Canadian brewers to tap into the low- and no-alcohol beer category by changing the way it’s taxed.
Beer fans are encouraged to share a photo of their favourite brew on social media Wednesday, tag their favourite brewery and brand, and use the hashtags #CDNBeerDay and #BeerProud.
