The Canadian College Athletic Association has announced that 32 Niagara College Knights have been named recipients of the 2019-20 CCAA National Scholar Award.
The CCAA National Scholar Award recognizes the outstanding academic accomplishments of CCAA student-athletes. To be recognized, individuals must achieve honours standing at their respective institution in the current academic year, while competing as a member of their institution’s intercollegiate sport program. At NC, a student-athlete must finish the season with a +80% average in their academic programs, demonstrating their success both on the playing field and in the classroom.
“Niagara College has a strong and consistent track record when it comes to scholar-athletes,” said NC associate director of Athletics and Recreation Michele O’Keefe. “Our student-athletes understand the importance of their NC education and how to balance their academics with their athletics. Congratulations to our Knights’ CCAA National Scholars on their amazing achievement.”
This year’s award winners represented eight Knights teams, with the women’s volleyball team leading the way with nine recipients. Other teams with recipients include men’s volleyball (5), men’s basketball (4), curling (4), men’s soccer (3), women’s basketball (3), women’s soccer (3), and golf (1).
O’Keefe notes that this marks the third consecutive year that Natasha Desjardins (women’s volleyball), Elijah Bugiardini (men’s volleyball), and Robert Zalewski (men’s volleyball) have achieved the award, while Christopher Hallborg (golf), Patrick Ioanidis (men’s soccer), Nick Buckborough (men’s volleyball), Madelyn Berg (women’s volleyball), Tamera Edwards (women’s volleyball), Anica Haberstock (women’s volleyball), and Taylor Morrison (women’s volleyball) all earned the award for the second consecutive year.
