The NC Libraries and Learning Commons Open Educational Resources (OER) team, consisting of Jaclyn Chambers Page and Siscoe Boschman, has created the NC Libraries and Learning Commons Information Skills Online Handbook, a guide to getting started with research for Niagara College students.
The handbook introduces and reinforces essential information literacy skills for students beginning their post-secondary careers and while the material is directed specifically to NC students, the guide can be used by anyone. Subjects include avoiding plagiarism, generating search terms, effective internet searching, evaluating information, references, and more.
Chambers Page and Boschman created the handbook as an alternative to the current information literacy offerings to provide NC faculty with another option to incorporate into their online courses for the 2020 Fall term and beyond.

The team has also created the Information Literacy Escape Room Series, a semester-long virtual event that challenges NC students to escape from four virtual escape rooms, each based on a chapter/theme from the handbook.
The four challenges are as follows:
- Escape Room #1: Introduction to College Research (Challenge open Sept. 21 – Oct. 16)
- Escape Room #2: Identifying & Discovering Resources (Challenge open Oct. 19- Nov. 6)
- Escape Room #3: Academic Integrity: Overview (Challenge open Nov. 9 – Nov. 27)
- Escape Room #4: Academic Integrity: Citations (Challenge open Nov. 30 – Dec. 18)
After completing each escape room, students can enter to win a prize for a $25 e-gift card. Additionally, students who successfully finish all four escape rooms will be entered into a draw for the grand prize: a $100 e-gift card.
