Nick Fearns with Niagara This Week writes about a group of Niagara College alumni who applied the skills they learned in the Game Development program to release a game for download via Steam. “The Fallen” is a medieval fantasy combat game produced by 6 Pillars Studio.
In the final semester of the Game Development program, program students formed groups to create a game for their capstone projects. NC alumnus and one sixth of 6 Pillars Studio Andrés Coimbra Castedo says, “When we first started the program, this was an achievement none of us could have imagined.”
Coimbra says, “Thankfully, the college supported us, and granted us the use of their labs throughout the summer to further develop our game. Additionally, we were able to expand our team, allowing us more flexibility when solving problems, and greatly improved our coordination, communication and discipline.”
The groups’ work over the summer was made possible due to an incubation space set up by the college. NC Game Development professor Conor MacNeill explains that the space helped the students take their game to market, and launching their project on Steam was an “amazing accomplishment.”
Emma Perretta, a current student and one of artist/developers behind “The Fallen,” said, “I now have the experience in utilizing multiple software to better support my art, therefore, giving me confidence and insight on developing my skills. Niagara College gave me an unparalleled experience to complete a professional video game, which is now released. I wish to continue learning and adapting new techniques in the field of game development.”

Associate dean, School of Media Studies, Linda Root, says, “There’s no greater testament to the success of our game development program than the achievements of our graduates and students.”
