In the Niagara Falls issue of Niagara This Week on March 10, Paul Forsyth writes about young women who are considering careers in trades and technology. Forsyth interviews students from the Falls who attended Niagara College’s Young Women’s Career Exploration Conference, a joint event with the Niagara Catholic District Secondary School technology skills competition on March 4.

The event sought to expose girls from grades 9 through 12 to the career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), of which are dominated by men.

NC’s Gina Grossi, professor in the School of Media Studies, who spoke on a panel to the 200 attendees, talked about how her interests in art and technology came together in a lucrative career as a computer programmer in the gaming industry.

Saint Michael Catholic High School student Brie Hanlon is interested in becoming an electrician after taking an auto mechanic class in school and doing a co-op in construction. Hanlon discusses the challenges and opportunities for young women studying in the trades. She says, “We can set an example for future generations.”
