Mike Balsom, reporting for YourTV Niagara, visited the Teaching Brewery at Niagara College on Sunday, March 8 for a unique International Women’s Day celebration, and a collaboration with the Pink Boots Society.
Balsom speaks to mature student in the Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program, Nicola Davey, who talks about why she became interested in a career in brewing after a successful first career as a consultant. He also interviews Lauren Zimbalatti, Brewmaster program alumna and part-time faculty. Zimbalatti speaks to their goal of drawing more women to the brewing industry.
Zimbalatti and the students have created a recipe for a ‘champagne of beers,’ a Brut India Pale Ale named ‘Rosé Wellies’ in honour of the Pink Boots Society which inspired the initiative. It was brewed with a special Pink Boots Blend of hops donated to the Pink Boots Society by Yakima Chief Hops (a portion of the hop sales is donated to the Society to benefit scholarships and education), and with Vermont Ale yeast donated by Escarpment Laboratories.
