Niagara College’s new greenhouse cat officially has a name – and that name is Scout.
The cat, who has been acclimatizing to his new home in the NC Greenhouse at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake for the past few weeks, was named through an online contest that garnered over 1,800 suggested names, submitted by NC students, staff, faculty and alumni.
The final name, chosen from among the submissions by college president Dan Patterson and his partner Saundra, has a greenhouse connection, as cats are often sought out in the industry to “scout” out mice and other critters on the job. The winning name was first submitted by Casey, an NC alumni, who will receive a a $50 Bench-to-Go gift card and a $50 Greenhouse gift card.

The new cat has large paws to fill, after the college’s previous Greenhouse Cat, Basil, passed away this past summer, after 15 years of life at the College. A plaque in Basil’s name was unveiled in October 2019.
A note from the new cat on the block:
While I love the hustle and bustle of the Greenhouse and all the attention from students, remember that I’m still settling into my new home at the College. Please be gentle and take extra care when interacting with me.
