On Wednesday, January 29, Niagara College’s campuses will be a hive for discussions around mental health support.
Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services – with the support of the Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) and the NC Therapeutic Recreation Activity Centre (NC-TRAC) – will host a Let’s Talk Lounge at both campuses, in honour of Bell Let’s Talk Day.
The Let’s Talk Lounges, located in the AH foyer at the Welland campus, and outside Health Services at the Daniel J. Patterson campus at Niagara-on-the-Lake, will serve as a drop-in space with comfortable seating and on-campus resources. Students will be able to engage in conversation with trained staff in Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services as well as other students. Bell Let’s Talk speech bubbles will ask the question, “How do you find balance in your life,” to prompt dialogue about personal wellness.
NCSAC will provide tea, coffee, snacks, as well as some activities for stress-relief. NC-TRAC will provide a self care activity for students at each campus adjacent to the lounge area.
“Working to decrease stigma and provide mental health support to Niagara College students are very important parts of the services we provide in the Health, Wellness, and Accessibility department,” said College nurse Christine Philbrick who helped organize the event. “Participating in Bell Let’s Talk Day alongside NCSAC and NC-TRAC provides a fantastic opportunity for our staff to engage in meaningful conversations about mental health with students and provides a safe and welcoming space to promote connections within our campus community.”
