Niagara College was in the local news as reporter Dariya Baiguzhiyeva with Niagara Now covered the annual icewine harvest at the NC Teaching Winery. After waiting for the temperature to drop, NC embarked on an early morning grape harvest on January 9, with temperatures reaching -7 degrees Celsius in Niagara-on-the-Lake at NC’s 40-acre vineyard.
While the temperatures weren’t quite cool enough for icewine designation, winemaker and professor Ron Giesbrecht explains that the grapes are suitable for a special select late harvest.
Baiguzhiyeva interviews students Glen Fraser, Eamonn Donnelly, Catriona McConnell and Kennan McEachern on their experience picking grapes in the annual harvest.
Professor Tom Shulz explains that Niagara College is the only school that allows students to make icewine.
