From December 14 to 15, 27 young women from the ages of 16 to 32 attended Niagara College first Women’s Coach School, earning their introductory level coaching credentials through the National Coach Certification Program in either basketball, volleyball or soccer.
NC’s Athletics and Recreation, and the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport partnered to offer the Women’s Coach School, a first for Welland and a unique opportunity tailored to women in sport. The first entry-level coach certification of its kind, the coach school fostered participation and south to show women and girls the career possibilities in sport. The majority of attendees were from Niagara, with a handful making the trip from Scarborough.
“There was a great feeling in the air of camaraderie and willingness to learn,” said Michele O’Keefe, associate director, Athletics and Recreation. “There’s no doubt this program will make an impact in our community, inspiring young women and girls, and showcasing Niagara College as a hub for excellence in sport.”
Learning facilitators, assigned by the sport governing bodies, led the entry-level coach certification for volleyball, basketball and soccer. Participants heard from inspiring guest speakers throughout the weekend, including Chris Critelli, former Olympian and published author of “That’s My Coach,” Dale Melnick, high performance athlete-turned-coach, and Sabrina D’Angelo, a current Canadian Soccer National team member and Welland native.
“The Women’s Coach School was a success thanks to the support from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport, and due to the work of staff in Athletics and Recreation, and NCSAC to welcome coaches, participants, facilitators and guest speakers,” said O’Keefe.
