Niagara This Week’s Sarah Fergusen covered an initiative with students in Niagara College’s Hairstyling and Photography programs who visited residents at the Welland Hospital’s extended care unit. Hairstyling students gave residents a hair cut, and women received help with their makeup. Each of the seniors then had their photos taken for Christmas cards to be sent to their loved ones.
The initiative started in 2018 when program manager, for the Welland Hospital extended care unit Lezlie Leduc approached Niagara College to ask if hairstyling students would be interested in coming to do residents’ hair. This holiday season, NC’s Photography students are on board, and Leduc hopes it will be an annual tradition.
Renee Bernard, hairstyling teacher, said having NC students work with the residents is beneficial for for the students, a chance to :hone their skills, while getting to know people who are likely to become future clients.”
Student Suraya Lee is quoted: “I’ve always loved hairstyling and I came to Niagara College specifically for that program, but this is an amazing way to get involved in the community and really see the difference in making someone happy.”
