NC’s Athletics and Recreation, and the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport are proud to present the NC’s Women’s Coach School, December 14 to 15 at the Welland Campus, part of a larger Women in Sport strategy.
The Women’s Coach School is a first for Welland, offering a unique opportunity to women in sport. It is the first entry-level coach certification of its kind, aimed at fostering participation and attracting interest from women and girls to envision themselves in a career in sport.
“We know that sport is a community grower. NC’s Women in Sport strategy is a way to build capacity for the growth of sport leadership,” said Michele O’Keefe, associate director, Athletics and Recreation. “We want to empower women of all ages to see a viable path to success – both personally and professionally – in sport.”
Learning facilitators, assigned by the sport governing bodies, will lead the entry-level coach certification for volleyball, basketball and soccer. This initiative is an example of NC’s collaboration with provincial and national sport organizations and governing bodies which include Ontario Basketball, Canada Basketball, Ontario Volleyball, Volleyball Canada, Canada Soccer and Ontario Soccer.
“Many athletes get their start on the business side of sport by becoming a coach. The Women’s Coach School is a step to help women move from athlete to coach and from coach to executive,” said Damian Goulbourne, associate dean, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Sport. “We’re excited to be a partner with Athletics and Recreation to help women advance in careers in sport management and administration.”
The two day event will also feature guest speakers Chris Critelli, former Olympian and published author of “That’s My Coach,” Dale Melnick, high performance athlete-turned-coach, and Sabrina D’Angelo, a current Canadian Soccer National team member and Welland native.
“Niagara College’s Women’s Coach School is a wonderful collaboration among many sport leaders in Canada for the benefit of our entire sports community, particularly the athletes who will benefit from working with these dedicated coaches in the future,” said Glen Grunwald, President and CEO of Canada Basketball.
