Niagara This Week covered NC’s re-release of Juno, a commemorative war-time beer.
Students at NC’s Teaching Brewery, under the guidance of Brewmaster Jon Downing, were inspired to create a beer that soldiers drank during the Second World War. The end product of this unique student learning opportunity was first released in the spring, and the re-release of Juno was timed with Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 at the request of the legion.
Brewmaster student Tony Arnold explains that his grandfather Val served in Africa, so working on this commemorative brew held sentimental value.
Harry Hamilton, president of Port Colborne’s legion branch 56, is quoted: “What a great way to inspire the memories of 75 years ago and to allow the younger generations to taste a piece of history of their parents or grandparent or great-grandparent.”
Victor North, support liaison with the Brewmaster program, is pictured with the model spitfire he built, featuring casks of beer under each wing, akin to the transportation method used to deliver beer to troops in France.
Juno has and will continue to be served in limited quantities at many legions.
