On October 11, representatives from Niagara College’s Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) joined college staff, students and community members from Pride Niagara to paint and unveil a new rainbow crosswalk at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus.

In Spring 2019, Niagara College committed to installing the crosswalks at both campuses, thanks to a student-led initiative championed by NCSAC after several discussions with students of the LGBTQ2+ community at Niagara College. The first crosswalk was unveiled at the Welland Campus in June 2019. Completion of a recent road realignment and paving project at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus has now allowed that campus’s crosswalk to be installed.

“The rainbow crosswalks signify NCSAC’s resolute support for not only the LGBTQ2+ community on campus, but all communities and students at Niagara College,” said NCSAC president Tom Price. “They also signify the respectful partnership and collaboration between NCSAC, Niagara College, and the student body to ensure Niagara College is a safe, diverse, and inclusive space for all.”

Members of the college community came together to try their hand at painting the crosswalk – which crosses the main roadway between Benchmark Restaurant and the Wine Visitor and Education Centre – and celebrate its completion. Guests also enjoyed some rainbow-themed treats from NC’s Benchmark Restaurant. Both crosswalks were installed with the help of NC’s Facilities Management Services staff.

“Niagara College is pleased to work with our Student Administrative Council toward our shared goal of providing a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for all of our students,” said Niagara College president Dan Patterson. “The completion of rainbow crosswalks at both our campuses is symbolic of our support for the LGBTQ2+ community, and the great things we can accomplish when we pursue this goal together.”
