On Saturday, September 21, Niagara College’s Office of Sustainability hosted the first of two Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up events for the 2019-2020 academic year.
Organized by Environmental Technician (Field and Laboratory) student David Postman, a group of 20 NC students as well as community residents participated.
In just two hours, participants collected more than 185 pounds of litter from Jones Beach in St. Catharines. Single-use plastic made up the majority of the waste collected, including 526 plastic bottle caps, 491 cigarette butts, 278 drinking straws, a car bumper, a broken home water line, and multiple types of microplastic.

A second Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up will be held on Saturday, October 5 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus from 10 a.m. to noon. College staff and students are welcome and encouraged to participate. All supplies will be provided; participants just need to bring themselves (and maybe a bottle of water).
Participants are asked to meet outside of the NC Teaching Greenhouse (in the area between the greenhouse and the brewery).
